Better, Not Bigger
Warning opinions / observations:
When you add enough weight on a structure, any flaws in the foundation will quickly reveal themselves.
Stress reveals weakness that wasn’t visible before.
Cracks form.
The foundation crumbles.
And the integrity of the entire structure above is put at risk.
If we’re being honest with ourselves, we’ve taken on quite a bit of weight and it revealed weakness in places we thought were solid.
Maybe it’s just me.
As we build our little houses, we expect the newest add-ons to not be perfect the first time. We’re ok with repainting and redecorating. “That’s new. It’s still a work in progress,” we tell ourselves.
But when the basics, the things we had “figured out” so long ago start faltering, it’s devastating.
Shore up the foundations!
Look around. Listen carefully. You’ll see it.
We’re in a time of addressing the foundations. In friendships, businesses, marriages, families, and yes, our relationships with the Lord.
It’s a time to go low.
Bigger isn’t better. Especially with a shoddy foundation, so we are going back to the basics.
Listen to your pastor on Sunday.
Listen to your boss at work.
Listen to what you’re having to remind your kids.
I’ll bet there is (or needs to be) a pull back to foundations before we ever think about going higher.
It’s not glamorous work–your hands calloused and stained by mortar. It’s dirty. It’s difficult.
More Chip Gaines than Joanna.
If you do it right, most outsiders won’t even notice the work you’ve done! But it’s where we need to be today so we can go where we need to tomorrow.
Grab a trowel, let’s mix some concrete and get to work! We’ll be back to add-ons and decorations soon, but a solid foundation is crucial for holding its weight.
“Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. Return, O my soul, to your rest; for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you.”
– Psalm 116:5-7 ESV

I am a father to 3 powerful littles and married to my best friend. My wife says I'm proficient in quoting The Office, a jack of all trades and I am convinced that popcorn with apple juice is the best remedy for a hard day. No judgment! I spend my days brainstorming and perfecting good communication with a team of passionate creatives. And I believe that being in relationship with the Father should be, and is, simple. I'll spend my whole life on Him and never regret a single moment. Won’t you join me?
